What Is Stained Concrete?

Updated: Nov 9, 2022

What Exactly Is Stained Concrete?

Stained concrete is similar to changing the colour of other materials such as wood. Instead of using paint to create an opaque surface, staining provides a variety of hues and tones for concrete using various solutions and techniques. When it comes to staining concrete, practise makes perfect, and homeowners and business owners can master the art of creating concrete textures that resemble the colours of natural stone, leather, marble, and wood.

Because concrete is extremely absorbent, a property owner can stain it almost any colour imaginable. Dynamic Concrete Pumping is here to explain how staining can be used to update the look of any landscape.

Concrete Staining Types

When staining, the first thing to consider is the base for your solution. Concrete stains are classified into two types: acid stains and water-based stains.

Acid Stain: Inorganic metallic salts, hydrochloric acid, and water are commonly used to create acid stains. The stains absorb into the concrete surface and react with calcium hydroxide to form a bond. Acid staining produces rich colour tones of tans, browns, blues, and greens, as well as marbling effects.

Water-based stains: They are non-reactive and consist of an acrylic polymer and pigment mixture. These stains fill the pores on the surface of concrete, allowing for a wider range of colours to be achieved, including translucent and opaque finishes. Water-based solutions are more consistent in general because they do not involve concrete reactions and are free of solvents and acids.

Both types of concrete staining are excellent for revitalizing dull surfaces both inside and out. The following applications may be included in a home or business concrete staining project:

• Walkways

• Patios

• Garage floor coverings

• Interior flooring

• Countertop

• Walls

• Near fireplaces

Is it necessary to stain concrete?

Staining concrete indoors and outdoors is a great way to improve the appearance of property surfaces. These home improvement projects are inexpensive (about $2 per square foot) and allow you to create custom colours for both interior and exterior concrete. Because of the nature of concrete, no two surfaces ever look the same, so each home and business has its own distinct appearance.

Acid and water-based stains are simple to apply to both old and new concrete. You can match property features to concrete stains ranging from earth tones to a full palette spectrum.

Concrete Staining Tips

  • Remember that you can only do stained concrete if you can get to the surface pores. Prepare concrete surfaces for staining by removing any dirt, residues, or grime that may obstruct staining contact. Complete surface preparation with mechanical grinding or concrete cleaning and degreasing solutions.

  • When you're ready to apply your stain, use tape to mask off any areas you want to protect. Pay close attention to the manufacturer's instructions when diluting staining coats to achieve the desired colour.

  • Allow the stain to dry for about 24 hours after applying coats with sprays or brushes.

  • You can keep staining until you're satisfied with the colours. After the stain has dried completely, rinse the surface with water until the runoff is clear. If necessary, use a brush to remove any remaining staining, then rinse thoroughly, allow the surface to dry completely, and apply your preferred protective coat sealer.

When staining concrete surfaces, keep the following in mind:

• Staining does not conceal cracks or concrete damage.

• When applied to concrete, liquid solutions will change colour.

• Color lasts a long time, so make sure you like it by staining a small "test" section first.

• Colors of stains are more intense on newer concrete surfaces.

• Color variations are normal during the staining process.
